If you have damaged or weakened teeth, your dentist may recommend a crown. This is often recommended when very little of your natural enamel remains before or after filling leaving the tooth prone to breaking from chewing forces. Fillings are great for restoring small to medium sized cavities in the tooth, however if the filling is relatively very large the tooth will need to be reinforced for strength. A crown is essentially a helmet for the tooth which is custom-made to be bonded over your natural tooth. A tooth with a crown will be much stronger to sustain chewing forces and therefore much less likely to chip or break.
